DeeLux, Dee and Dave Brown’s buy-sell-trade business in The Plaza, is both a clothing store-with vintage selections and the latest styles-along with a gift shop.  “We do it all, and I think that sets us apart,” Dave says. “We truly do have something for everybody.”

Dee Brown has been into quality second-hand clothing since the late 1970s.

“Back then, the fashions weren’t that fashionable,” she recalls.  “But shopping for vintage clothing has always been different —and cheaper.  You don’t know what you’re going to find, and once you do find something, it’s going to be great.  It’s always the thrill of the surprise.”

So, after selling her husband, Dave Brown, on the joys of thrift-store shopping, the couple has spent years operating re-sale businesses in Riverside, where they still live, Costa Mesa and Santa Ana.  Their most recent venture, DeeLux, is a buy-sell-trade shop that opened in the Plaza in May.

For the Browns, it’s the latest example of how a hobby turned into a business.

DeeLux offers more than just vintage and new clothes.  Near the entrance you’ll find kitchenware, bath and body products, new clothing and fashion accessories, along with items that make quirky, unexpected gifts.

“We feel like we’re setting ourselves apart with the diversity of what we do,” Dave says.  “Most of the buy-sell-trade businesses stay away from vintage clothing, because it’s a difficult area to navigate.  But we love doing it, and we also buy and sell designer items––whether it’s Jeffrey Campbell shoes, Coach purses or something else.

“We run the gamut from inexpensive clothing for teenagers to vintage and designer for women looking for items that are truly special.”

DeeLux also sells clothing and some accessories for men.

Everyone on staff is expert on the latest trends, which is important, Dee says.  “Some styles go out of date so fast.”

The Browns, who also have another DeeLux outlet in Claremont that opened in 2013, have long wanted a place in the Plaza.

“Orange is a unique community.  It almost feels like you’re in Mayberry and going back in time with nice people out walking their dogs,” says Dave.  “Everyone has been so friendly since we opened.  They’ll stop in and say, ‘Hi, we live in the neighborhood and want to welcome you to Old Towne Orange.’  Dee and I have enjoyed how friendly everyone has been, and how excited they’ve been about something a little different in the neighborhood.”
