Working together at Old California Lantern Company, Tom Richard and his son Craig truly exemplify the concept of passing the torch.
Founded by Tom in 1989, the familyowned and operated business produces handcrafted lighting fixtures made of solid brass and art glass. From their facility at 975 North Enterprise Street, Tom does most of the design work and brand marketing while Craig serves as vice president and runs the daytoday operations.
The oldfashioned lanterns and lamps, which feature nostalgic silhouette designs and beautiful patina finishes, appeal to homeowners and architects who appreciate the Made in America fine craftsmanship.
I still draw everything freehand fullscale, then the computer guys take over with the 3D software, said Tom, company president. Thats where Craig steps in. He has a very good feel for adjusting the specs to make it a viable product that will work.
According to Tom, Craig got into the family business 15 years ago, starting out in the paint booth. Over time, he gravitated to the entire business. Today, Craig is involved with just about every facet of the company, including conducting tours of the factory and showroom, which are open to the public.
The fatherson dynamic works well for their business, says Tom.
We have a mutual respect for each other. Its a wonderful feeling to know that every day you go to work, youre going to be working with your son and that you get along so well.
Toms other son, Nathan, also works at the company parttime. Completing the family circle in the workplace, Toms wife Lesley handles the financials.
In addition to lighting fixtures, the company has recently unveiled new product lines such as mailboxes and house numbers. Shining the light on Americanmade, the Richards invite customers to come in and see the products first hand.
When people take our factory tours, they always comment on how much fun it must be to work here, Tom said. And the truth is, it is! ●
